CHUNG TAI CHAN MONASTERY

Acceding to the request of all his disciples, Grand Master Wei Chueh founded Chung Tai Chan Monastery (CTCM) in the center of Taiwan, Puli in 1987. Inaugurated in 2001, CTCM integrates the teachings of sudden enlightenment, gradual cultivation and the altruistic and ascetic practices of Buddhist traditions. The Buddhist community, housed in this modern masterpiece of architectural achievement, is committed to the teaching and dissemination of Buddha's teaching and wisdom, facilitated by the amenities of modern technology. The founding of  CTCM marks the revival of Chinese Chan Buddhism, the core teaching of which is applicable to and beneficial for all humanity: that all beings have a Buddha essence and, most importantly, that it is the personal responsibility of each individual to manifest it in his/her life.

To achieve this goal, CTCM proposes the following: scriptural studies, deeds of beneficence, and Samadhi. Scriptural studies lead to right views, deeds of beneficence lead to accumulated merits and resources, and Samadhi facilitates seeing one's Self-nature. With diligent practice of the three complementary aspects, one integrates theoretical study, meditative insight as well as the altruistic practice of the Bodhisattva path.

The Four Tenets of Chung Tai, as set forth by Grand Master Wei Chueh, serve as guidelines to all cultivators of pure Mind:

To our elders be respectful;

To our juniors be kind;

With all humanity be harmonious;

In all endeavors be true.

Under the leadership of Grand Master Wei Chueh, CTCM has now established over 90 meditation centers and branches in Taiwan and abroad. This movement has received international recognition and is gaining momentum. Its message is that the goal of every life is to transcend self-attachment and to awaken to one's Self-Nature.
