Chung Tai Zen Center of Houston offers the fundamentals of meditation and Zen Buddhism throughout the year. In the meditation sessions, students are taught different methods of meditation, including breath counting, mindfulness of the breathing, and middle way reality contemplation. The meditation hall can accommodate up to 100 participants. The atmosphere is serene and inductive to quiet inner contemplation. Meditation needs expert guidance and discipline. The purpose of Zen meditation is to help us reach an understanding of the difficult problems in life and thereby gain true wisdom, clarity, and peace of mind. The way to achieve this is not by external analysis but by focusing inward into our own minds. A person should be healthy and without any severe physical or mental illness. If you have any limitations such as difficulty with sitting, chronic pain, or dietary restrictions, please let us know in advance. Each semester is 3 months long and attendance is mandatory for seeking Zen meditation certification. Everyone is welcome to join however we encourage children 16 years of age and younger to attend our Youth meditation course.
There are beginning, intermediate, and advanced meditation and Buddhism classes, as well as youth and children’s classes. Some of the topics covered in classes include; the History of Zen Buddhism, the Teachings of the Buddha, the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, Emptiness and the Middle Way, and the Principle of Causality.
After each semester we have a ceremony to award students who have completed the meditation course. This is a great opportunity to meet students in various classes as well as listen to students reflect on their experiences and a Dharma talk from the Abbot Venerable Master Jian Zong.
